Bio
I never planned on becoming a writer but am glad I did. Writing is a challenge I willingly embrace. I love creating characters, imagining settings, pondering plots and finding the right words to describe it all.
Writing is a gift, a slow, personal challenge. Writing is a way of learning. If there is something I want to know, or understand, the best way for me to grasp something new is through reading and writing. Awhile back, I started writing stories for children. I wrote one story after the other. Some were good, and some were not so good. It didn't matter: I considered my early attempts at writing for children the artistic equivalent of singing in the shower, harmless but fun.
But I kept at it, and after awhile I noticed my writing was starting to improve. I joined a critique group, and my writing improved. I joined SCBWI – The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators – and my writing improved. I kept writing, and my writing improved. Eventually I started calling my stories "manuscripts" and began submitting them to publishing companies. Now, three of my stories have been made into books.
I have a B.A. from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, and a master’s degree in Urban Planning and Policy from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I currently serve as Program Co-Chair for the Illinois chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).
